Fighting

Strategies to Consider:

You may or may not see warning signs of potential fighting.  Typically, fighting is prefaced with horseplay, name calling, verbal invitations to fight, and/or shoving.  Sometimes, it happens rather quickly.

As a substitute, you are at a disadvantage as you are not aware of students who may be have a history of fighting. Be ready. Do not overreact and remember, safety first for you and your students.

Be aware of the district's policy and consequences for fighting.

Stay calm and focus your voice.  Direct the other students to remain in their seats or to step out of the way.

Try and read the warning signs and separate the students who are heating up. Lead their next steps with positive, directional comments such as:

-  “I see you two are not getting along, but I like how you are able to step back from each other and talk about the problem.”
-  “I understand you are both upset with one another and I like how you are interested in working this out.  You are doing the right thing by taking a deep breath, stepping back, and using your words.  How can I help?”
